Pneumatic Compression

Pneumatic compression uses inflatable sleeves that fill and release in a wave along the limb — a rhythmic, rolling squeeze that encourages fluid to move out of the legs or arms.

The pneumatic pump wraps the leg or arm in a multi-chambered sleeve. The chambers inflate one after another, from the far end of the limb towards the body, then release — creating a slow, rolling wave of gentle pressure along the limb. The sensation is often described as a firm, rhythmic hug; most patients find it deeply relaxing, and some doze through it.

That direction matters. The sequence follows the same principle as manual lymphatic drainage: encouraging fluid towards the healthy lymphatic pathways that can carry it away, rather than simply squeezing the limb.

Where it appears in the clinic

  • Lymphoedema sessions — the pump supports volume reduction in an affected limb, used alongside manual drainage, laser over the node groups, and compression bandaging or garments.
  • Lipoedema care — used with the aim of relieving the pressure, heaviness and aching that many women with lipoedema describe in their legs.
  • Fluid retention and tired, heavy legs — within decongestive sessions for patients whose legs swell with travel, standing work, heat or inactivity.
  • Recovery work — after suitable surgery or injury and around training, where the aim is supporting circulation and easing post-exertion heaviness.

How Kylie uses it

The pump never works alone. A typical session places it after the lymphatic pathways have been prepared — nodes cleared with laser or by hand — so the fluid the sleeve moves has somewhere to go. While the sleeves work on your legs, Kylie's hands are usually working elsewhere: it is one of the ways a single session can treat more of the body at once.

As with everything in the clinic, whether the pump belongs in your sessions is decided at your Initial Assessment, and it may not be appropriate with some conditions — active infection, clotting concerns or certain heart conditions among them. Kylie screens for these before it is ever used.
