Lipoedema
Lipoedema is a chronic condition, occurring almost exclusively in women, marked by a symmetrical build-up of fatty tissue in the legs and sometimes the arms. It is frequently misdiagnosed — and it is not a failure of willpower.

Lipoedema is characterised by bilateral, symmetric enlargement of the limbs caused by the deposition of fatty tissue, typically extending from the hips down to the ankles; in around 30% of cases the arms are affected as well. It is associated with hormonal factors and genetics, often first appearing during puberty, pregnancy or menopause, and the tissue can be tender and bruise easily.
Because it looks like other things, lipoedema is commonly misdiagnosed as bilateral lymphoedema, severe cellulite or simple weight gain. An informed assessment matters: with prolonged overstrain of the lymphatic system, a secondary lymphoedema can develop on top of the lipoedema (lipo-lymphoedema), which changes how the condition is best managed.
What treatment involves
There is no cure for lipoedema, and any therapist who promises one should be treated with caution. What supportive treatment aims to do is ease the load: encourage the movement of fluid through the affected tissue, reduce the aching and heaviness many women describe, and keep the tissue as soft and comfortable as possible.
A session for lipoedema may combine:
- Manual lymphatic drainage — light, rhythmic Dr Vodder techniques to encourage fluid movement through the affected areas.
- Low level laser therapy applied over the affected tissue.
- Hivamat deep oscillation, a gentle therapy used with the aim of easing heaviness and supporting fluid movement in the tissue.
- Pneumatic compression to relieve pressure and discomfort in the limbs.
- Advice on compression garments, movement and self-care between sessions.

Lymphoedema
Lymphoedema is a condition of localised fluid retention and tissue swelling caused by a compromised lymphatic system. It needs ongoing, informed management — and you are the most important member of the team that manages it.
Post-Surgical Swelling
Swelling is part of how the body responds to surgery. When it lingers, gentle lymphatic work may support the body in clearing it — at a stage when ordinary massage is not appropriate.
Complete Decongestive Therapy
Complete Decongestive Therapy is the internationally recognised, multi-part approach to managing lymphoedema — combining manual lymphatic drainage, compression, skin care and movement into one coordinated program.
