Headache, Migraine & Sinus Support Guide

Overview & Core Pillars of Headache & Sinus Care

Headaches, migraines and sinus congestion have many possible causes, and for some people, tension and congestion around the head and neck may play a part. Sessions focus on gentle head and neck massage, soft lymphatic techniques around the sinuses, easing tension at the base of the skull and a calm, settling pace.

  • Head & Neck Tension Release: Gentle massage around the head, neck and the base of the skull, commonly sought for tension headaches.
  • Sinus & Lymphatic Support: Soft lymphatic techniques aimed at supporting fluid movement around the frontal, maxillary and ethmoid sinuses when the face feels congested.
  • Trigeminal Area Soothing: Unhurried work around the face, where the trigeminal nerve runs, which many people prone to migraines find soothing.
  • Cervical & Suboccipital Release: Easing tight neck muscles and upper neck stiffness, which can refer discomfort into the temples, forehead and eyes.
  • Nervous System Settling: A calm, restful session designed to help ease the stress response, a common trigger for headaches.
  • Pressure & Comfort: Aims to ease facial pressure, sinus heaviness and head discomfort, as a gentle complement to any medication your doctor recommends.
  • Everyday Habits: Practical posture tips, simple self-drainage techniques and workstation adjustments for home use.

Concerns People Commonly Bring

  • Tension Headaches: Band-like pressure across the forehead, scalp or back of the head, often linked with muscle tightness and stress.
  • Migraines: Recurring throbbing, often one-sided headaches, sometimes with light sensitivity. People often seek calming care alongside their GP's management plan.
  • Sinus Congestion & Sinusitis: Ongoing sinus pressure, facial tenderness and a blocked-feeling nose.
  • Cervicogenic Headaches: Headaches that seem to start in the neck, sometimes after whiplash or with upper neck joint stiffness.
  • Temporomandibular (TMJ) Related Headaches: Jaw tension, clenching and temple headaches associated with overworked jaw muscles.

Technologies & Techniques Used in Head & Sinus Care

Sessions may include one or more of the following, chosen to suit you:

  • Remedial Massage (Neck & Shoulders) — Careful hands-on work for tight neck, shoulder and jaw muscles, adjusted to how your tissue feels on the day. Commonly sought for tension-type headaches, and many people find it deeply calming.
  • Deep Oscillation Therapy — Electrostatic pulsed oscillations create a gentle resonance across facial and neck tissue. Patients commonly book it for sinus-related pressure, facial puffiness and a heavy, congested feeling.
  • Manual Lymphatic Drainage (Head & Neck MLD) — Rhythmic, gentle strokes along the neck and facial lymph nodes, designed to support lymphatic return. Commonly sought for sinus congestion, allergy-related puffiness around the eyes and a full feeling in the head.
  • Low-Level Laser Therapy (LLLT) — Photobiomodulation, which research has studied in relation to local inflammation and tissue recovery. It is used here with the aim of soothing sensitive areas around the sinuses and trigeminal nerve.

Supportive Care & Everyday Strategies

Many people like to combine gentle in-clinic care with simple routines at home.

In-Clinic Techniques

  • Suboccipital Release: Gentle, targeted release of the muscles at the base of the skull, a common area of tension in neck-related headaches.
  • Sinus Point Acupressure: Gentle pressure at the supraorbital and infraorbital foramina, small points above and below the eyes, which many people find eases congestion.
  • Posture & Neck Support: Guidance and gentle work aimed at easing forward head posture strain and supporting the neck's natural (lordotic) curve.

At-Home Self-Care Routine

  • Warm Steam & Saline Rinses: Daily nasal rinsing with sterile or cooled boiled water, which many people use to help keep nasal passages clear of allergens and dust.
  • Ergonomic Workstations: Raising your monitor to eye level to reduce the neck strain that often accompanies tension headaches.
  • Hydration & Electrolytes: Drinking enough water, as dehydration can trigger headaches for some people.

Nutritional & Environmental Triggers

For some people, headaches and sinus flares seem linked with particular foods, allergens or environmental factors. Noting patterns can help you and your GP spot them.

Common Dietary Triggers to Monitor

  • Vasoactive Amines: Aged cheeses, cured meats, red wine and chocolate, which some people find can bring on a migraine.
  • Additives & Processed Foods: Artificial sweeteners, MSG and highly processed foods, which some people associate with headaches.
  • Histamine-Rich Foods: Fermented foods or citrus, which may aggravate sinus symptoms in sensitive people.

Environmental & Lifestyle Support

  • Air Quality: A HEPA air purifier in the bedroom can help reduce indoor dust and mould.
  • Magnesium & CoQ10: Nutrients that have been studied in relation to migraine frequency. Please check with your GP or pharmacist before starting any supplements.
  • Stress Management: Daily diaphragmatic breathing, which many people find eases the build-up of tension.

Pre-Treatment Guidelines & Preparation

Before your headache or sinus session:

  • Headache / Sinus Log: Note how often symptoms occur, their intensity (1-10), any triggers and where you feel the discomfort.
  • Hydration: Drink a full glass of water before arriving, to help you feel comfortable during tissue and lymphatic work.
  • Minimal Fragrances: Please avoid strong perfumes or scented lotions, as strong scents can trigger migraines during treatment.
  • Your Medications: Please tell your practitioner about any acute (abortive) migraine medication or pain relief you've taken recently.

Post-Treatment Expectations & At-Home Care

What to Expect

Many people notice less facial pressure, clearer-feeling nasal passages and a lighter feeling in the head afterwards, though everyone responds differently. Mild tiredness or a light headache can occur briefly and usually passes. If a headache is severe, sudden or unlike your usual ones, please seek medical advice.

At-Home Actions

  • Gentle Nasal Steam: Steam with a drop of eucalyptus or peppermint oil can feel soothing.
  • Rest & Hydrate: Drink plenty of water and allow your nervous system some quiet time.
  • Gentle Neck Stretches: Practise the range-of-motion stretches your practitioner has shown you, to keep your neck comfortable.

Follow-Up Sessions & Ongoing Care

Everyone's experience of headaches and sinus concerns is different, and many people prefer a series of sessions so their practitioner can get to know their patterns. If it would help, you're welcome to book your next session or chat about what might suit you.
